So Much

Sometimes you come across a concept or an idea that just hits you. Pow. To call it an epiphany almost sounds too clinical in this age of pharmaceutical brand names.

Sometimes a little bit of explanation just hits you a certain way. In your own words, it “explains SO MUCH.”

Maybe for scientists, the concept may be something about string theory or quantum physics or some other unifying principle. For someone more . . . eh, how you say? . . . less bright, it’s the shiznit.

This may be the string theory that explains a lot of choices I’ve made in my life.

People have a limited supply of will power.

The brain has a limited capacity for self-regulation, so exerting willpower in one area often leads to backsliding in others. The good news, however, is that practice increases willpower capacity, so that in the long run, buying less now may improve our ability to achieve future goals -- like losing those 10 pounds we gained when we weren't out shopping.

How deep is a Shaolin Monk’s reservoir of will power? Do Zen Buddhist monks dream of excess?

This pic makes me think of the discipline and will power to eat in that position. It also reminds me of a demetri martin joke. He goes to a park to write and do some work. He hears an old man making clucking sounds and he looks up. The old man is trying to get the attention of a squirrel but the squirrel continues intently to eat the acorn and it's at that moment that demetri realizes he has less focus than a squirrel.
