Mom, the Coldheart
Last night, the pundits on cable news kept discussing Hillary’s tears as being a watershed moment and in Hillary’s speech last night she thanked New Hampshire for helping her find her voice.
That’s cool. I finally saw footage of it today on Youtube.
It was heartfelt and genuine. Of course, there are those that will attack her for it. They’ll see it as a sign of weakness. They’ll possibly make illogical connections between leading a country or how a leader should act or be perceived with stereotypical views on women, their emotions, and judgment.
Apparently, my mom is one such person. She called my sister and asked, "if she cries during campaign how is she going to handle being president?"
I don’t think my mom (immigrant, business owner, homemaker) could quite understand that bit about how tired she is, and how difficult it is to do what she tries to do such as exercise, and eat right, while on the campaign trail.
It's true that everything else Hillary got emotional about such as loving the country and wanting what’s best for it is what every other candidate feels. But maybe she's experiencing a new level of fatigue, or is feeling the weight of historic responsibility.
I'm hesitant to knock her too much because I may have to vote for her. I don’t know. Mom’s a bit of a roboticon when it comes to anything resembling a pity party.
It’s going to be interesting going into South Carolina and Las Vegas. We’ll see how much the Oprah effect will help in SC and, now that Barack’s got the service employees’ union to endorse him, whether these will make huge differences.

I thought Hillary's tears humanized her ... it was a whole different side of her, and I liked it. I still woulda voted for Obama, but I think the loss last night makes it clear that the youth vote is pretty unreliable.
Funny thing, my mom hated Hillary's tears too, though I think she thought she was being too patriotic, like "who cries for this fucked up country?"
I think it's hilarious that Mom saw through it. I also think it's significant that during the 18+ years that Mom worked all day every day at her business and at home I can never recall Mom losing her composure like that. Now I'm starting to think that maybe Mom _is_ a robot. But seriously, as Maureen Dowd put it, Hillary's tears may have convinced a few more older women to come out and vote for her, but are they going to convince Kim Jong Il to put the nukes away? Puh-rease.
